The End Was Only The Beginning
GEORGIA CIVIL WAR COMMISSION

Mary Alice was an expert in Civil War history, and her active involvement with the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) allowed her to not
only remain involved in historic preservation but also to further her
knowledge of Civil War history.
She was so well respected she was appointed by two Georgia governors as Chairman of the Georgia Civil War Commission, a volunteer position. Gov. Zell Miller appointed her in 1998 and Gov. Roy Barnes followed suit in
2000. She served commendably, and traveled throughout the state, working with developers and local politicians to preserve historic landmarks and
battle sites. Her activities as chairman of the commission were highly complementary to her position as executive director of the Historic Oakland
Foundation.
Mary Alice received a Commendation from Secretary of State Kathy Cox in 2000 for her efforts throughout the State of Georgia for “Preserving Georgia History.” Some of her work involved the Georgia Civil War Commission
and Historic Oakland Cemetery, while additional efforts were rendered
through the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
